“My father, who just passed away on the day he turned 93 — which was his wish — his last words were ‘I didn’t know it was going to be this hard'”

“It” being letting go of life.

“Our son, the first year he went to college was also the year they held the biggest national republican convention in that state, biggest one in history.  So he followed his buddies to the protest and they all got arrested.  When we found out that he was in jail, we were a good 8 hours away, there wasn’t much we could do for him.  We weren’t worried about him being in jail, because that was the consequence of his action, but we were worried that he was going to miss classes that we paid so much money to have him attend, so the only thing we could do was calling the dean of his school at 2 a.m. in the morning and said, ‘Hi, remember the black & white couple you met last week? That’s us, well, our son’s in jail, could you go get him out?’ So the dean went down to the police on our behalf.”
